There has been quite a lot of noise on social media over the past few days regarding a member of another costuming group being an alleged convicted pedophile www.facebook.com/UK.database/photos/pb.116071248566022.-2207520000.1454434071./568308346675641/?type=3&theater. I do not know if charities and people we work with will or will not start to ask for members to be cleared. Fundamentally we are never left in "sole charge" of children or unsupervised with them so legally we dont have to... But incidents like this put a spotlight on us all unfortunately and I can foresee this becoming yet more "red tape". You can as an individual apply for a FREE DBS check as a volunteer here: www.gov.uk/guidance/dbs-check-requests-guidance-for-employers#volunteer-applications I am in no way suggesting that people have to undertake this; but if we are requested by an event we may have to limit member to those who tick the right boxes. Sad state of affairs when one ruin things for the many; but as a parent I can also see the other side of wanting the assurances too.

I did have DBS clearance along with Counter Terrorist with the MOD, but I am thinking of sorting a DBS check out. I have been keeping my eye on this subject and its distressing to hear that people who are a risk to young people are using the costuming world as a way of access to youngsters. If I find out that anyone within this club is a risk, they will be banned from the club straight away. However I think we need to keep doing what we are doing until such time as it becomes a requirement and I do hope that does not happen.

Its a sad world we live in Graham.... I dont think its right or proper that members have to disclose that they do or dont have this as for a number of reasons people may not want to undertake DBS. My thoughts are IF we are asked we will make this clear on the event thread... Just because someone chooses not to go through DBS doesnt mean they have anything to hide. I also think that we cant insist on disclosure as we are not an "at risk" organisation (or thats my take on it).
So if people are willing to sign up to DBS or already have it or CRB and WANT to say so; thats brilliant; otherwise we just carry on as normal... unless asked otherwise then we make the group aware of the requirements of that event (they will be responsible for bringing certification to the event; the club cant hold them for data protection reasons).

I totally agree with Anita on this we cannot hold any DBS records so its up to the individual who wishes to go through the process. I can clearly state that I have no wish for anyone to do a DBS just to be a member of this club. We are rarely if never in regular close proximity to unattended children and so we are not required to undertake the DBS process. If we do get an event that requires this then I will either reason with them or turn the event down.

I too have had many checks done in the past as it was a required thing in the military for specialist personel so would not have any problem having more background checks done in the future if we are asked,a good thing in my opinion,,,,,

Does anyone know how long a CRB check lasts? Had one for my last job but that was a few years back, happily sort another one out.

Normally about 4 years, but there is an option to do it on a yearly basis but that is at your own cost as it entails creating an account which you subscribe to which is paid on a yearly basis.
